Post-COVID, Zoom calls became routine - first for work, then for catching up with friends, and eventually for distance learning courses. It was in one of these distance learning courses that I first met AkM. In today’s digital age, connection feels both accessible and elusive - a mix of quick texts, brief calls, and fleeting exchanges. Occasionally, though, someone can make even a virtual call feel profound - a moment when time and conversation flow effortlessly.
Of all those video calls, one with AkM stands out. This was our first video call after our online course had ended, planned after many days of uninterrupted texting. That night, what started as a simple online meeting turned into something unexpectedly meaningful, blurring the screen between us. It was different in the best way - filled with laughter, trust, and spontaneity. Just an evening spent talking, playing games, and listening to music, yet it left an impression that would linger long after we logged off.
The Countdown to 10 PM: Anticipation and Excitement
Text to Face: Zoom Call’s Unexpected Blend of Playfulness and Trust
The call was everything we’d hoped for - and more. We kicked off with an Escape game, sharing screens and diving into puzzles, teasing each other over every clue or missed guess. I learned that her father also enjoyed these games, and as we played, we ended up sharing much more about ourselves. It was more than just a game; it felt like we were getting to know each other on a deeper level. For a change of pace, we switched to dots and boxes (thanks to the soon-to-be-trashed Google Jamboard), a childhood favorite that was simple but nostalgic. This simpler game brought out an unexpected competitive spirit in both of us.
It was fun to see AkM slip into a playful, almost childlike side as she immersed herself in the games, animated and laughing without reservation. Hearing her celebrate a small win or pretend to be disappointed after a close game was refreshing; it felt like catching a glimpse of her unguarded side. We joked, strategized, and teased each other, both completely absorbed in the moment.
The most surprising part of the night was one I hadn’t anticipated: while we were playing dots and boxes, I noticed she’d turned on her video - a gesture I hadn’t expected. Yes, it was a Zoom call, and typically video would be the norm. But given how new we were to each other, I hadn’t assumed she’d turn it on, especially so late at night. When she enabled her video, it felt like she was reaching out, building a bridge of trust across the screen. Our connection suddenly felt real and tangible. I even adjusted my own lighting, as I hadn’t planned on turning on my video either. This mutual trust felt like a foundational pillar, deepening our connection.
Seeing her face after all those long text exchanges felt like a missing puzzle piece falling into place. Our conversation instantly became more personal; her expressions and laughter brought a warmth to our words that hadn’t been there before. We’d intended to keep the call to about an hour, but as the conversation flowed, the hours slipped by unnoticed. Each moment felt effortless, filled with laughter, shared stories, and the comfort of being vulnerable.
What started as a casual call turned into a night of pure connection - two people on opposite ends of the screen yet somehow feeling as though we were in the same room, laughing together.
The Music Connection
The last song we’d pre-selected was “Tu Jaaye Jahan” - a track that seemed to encapsulate my feelings about her: a connection that felt instinctive. When I asked for the next song, she chose “Tumhari Meri Baatein,” a choice that resonated perfectly. It was then I realized just how well we understood each other, not only through words but through shared tastes and experiences.
The Curiosity Spark: Questioning Our Way Closer
Once the games wound down and the music played softly in the background, we shifted gears and dove into a round of random questions - everything from favorite foods to quirky habits. We even did a quick round of rapid-fire questions, where each answer was just a single word or phrase. It added a playful rhythm to our conversation, and the answers revealed funny, unexpected sides of each other. Before long, we were searching online for more “Questions to ask a special friend”, laughing as we picked out ones to challenge each other with. As we shared our answers, it was amazing to discover how much we had in common - our tastes in food, our outlook on life, our general minimalist approach and so much more. With each new question, it felt like we were uncovering another little layer, finding a deeper connection through these spontaneous moments of curiosity and laughter.
From Text to Trust: A Night That Stands Out
This first Zoom call became much more than a simple meeting—it was the start of something profound. A foundation of trust, built over games, music, and laughter, it stood out in a world where digital connections often feel fleeting. That night reminded me of the rare beauty of truly connecting, even through a screen.
Looking back, I realize that our late-night call, with its simplicity and sincerity, was a milestone I didn’t even know I’d been waiting for. Sometimes, the most meaningful connections emerge from the smallest gestures: a bit of trust, shared music, and even a few playful games can bring two people closer than they ever imagined.
Before we finally said goodnight, we agreed to reconnect the next evening at 10 PM. Now, as I wait for the clock to strike 10, I feel that same sense of anticipation. I’m looking forward to picking up where we left off, eager to explore even more of the depth within our friendship.
